LOL Annie Get Your Gun comes to mind. We had racoons when we lived in PA but they didn't approach us. Of course we were inside looking out the window as they manuevered to get in the trash cans.

When I lived by the lake we had racoons that would take the lid off the garbage can and get into the garbage. They are very smart and crafty when it comes to getting a free meal. We also had opposums which are very mean if you try to make them leave. They stand their ground and hiss at you. I was the one that would run.

Hey, it works for cats! Excellent work.

Funny! And you made an excellent choice for a raccoon deterrent. I once had a mother with three babies come through the cat door and try to make off with a bag of cat food. A lot of excitement for 3 in the morning especially when they couldnt find their way out.

Pesty bold buggers aren't they? No handy tips this time. Bats I know about, raccoons not so much. The water pistol is an excellent idea. How are you feeling, hon? Been thinking about you! ~LA

We've had our share of raccoons, rats, mice, and skunks. The latter was the worse by far. One spray from one of those suckers and you have ever-lasting eau d'skunque perfuming up the entire yard. Plus they sprayed our dogs - twice. But those raccoons are single-minded... to get food at any cost, and they are on a par with squirrels for figuring out barriers. Maybe you could go to a vacant lot and set up a raccoon shelter with food that would keep them away from your house... or maybe not.

Raccons are quite clever creatures and it can be fun to watch the antics of a mother and her cubs, but not only can they vandalize and pillage a pantry, they can can carry rabies and can be a danger to both people and pets.

You are one tough pioneer mama! When I lived on the mainland, I had a dog door installed in my house, and I tell you I lived in horror of the day I may come home and find a raccoon, or worse, in the house. It never happened, but it added the frisson of anticipation to my days. Maybe load up that water pistol with some soapy water? Sprinkle cayenne pepper around your perimeter? Nah, they'd probably enjoy the spice...
